Here, the cold bites a little, the snow slows everything down, and that\u2019s just fine.<br\/>I often start down below, near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vallouise-pelvoux.fr\/\">Vallouise<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paysdesecrins.com\/en\/my-resort-my-village\/largentiere-la-bessee\/\">L\u2019Argenti\u00e8re-la-Bess\u00e9e<\/a>. Walking along the Gyr, when it\u2019s steaming a little in the early morning, when <strong>everything is quiet<\/strong>, and the mountains above are already white. In winter, the silence is different\u2014thicker.    <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-columns alignwide has-2-columns are-vertically-aligned-center layout-5050 is-style-background\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-column\"><div class=\"wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-title is-style-simple\"><h2><em>When it comes to eating, I <\/em>don&#8217;t have to look far.<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paysdesecrins.com\/en\/i-choose\/accommodation-and-restaurants\/restaurants\/\">A local restaurant<\/a><\/strong>, in Pelvoux or Vallouise. Hot dishes, melted cheese, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. In winter, we eat to warm up, not to look good.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-column\"><div class=\"wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-image\"><div class=\"wrapper\"><div class=\"group-media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paysdesecrins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/03-08-25-ailechaude-40-960x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"single_image ws-image-194757\"><div class=\"credits\"><\/div><\/div><p class=\"caption\"><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-title aligncenter\"><h3><em>When it&#8217;s time to head up to the resort,<\/em> I choose based on my mood<\/h3><\/div>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paysdesecrins.com\/en\/my-resort-my-village\/puy-saint-vincent\/\">Puy Saint Vincent<\/a> to ski. The slopes are wide, <strong>the views are unobstructed<\/strong>, and you can ski without being jostled. On clear days, you can see the entire valley, all the way to the bottom. It\u2019s the kind of resort we love here. We go there <strong>to ski at a leisurely pace<\/strong>, to go cross-country skiing, or just to walk in the snow when everything is white and silent. Not very far, not very high. Just far enough to hear the snow crunching under our feet and not run into many people.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the evening, I drive him away from the station lights.<br\/>We head back down a bit, park on the side of the road, toward Saint-Martin-de-Queyri\u00e8res or further up the valley. We turn off the engine. It\u2019s cold, but the sky is clear, and <strong>we gaze at the stars.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-column\"><div class=\"wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ws-library-ws-image\"><div class=\"wrapper\"><div class=\"group-media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paysdesecrins.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/refuge-des-e-crins-glacier-1-960x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"single_image ws-image-194724\"><div class=\"credits\"><\/div><\/div><p class=\"caption\"><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next day, if the weather is nice, I suggest we <strong>have coffee in the sun with a view of the mountains<\/strong>, take a short walk in the snow, or just gaze at the peaks around Pelvoux before heading back. She often doesn\u2019t say much. She just looks.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she leaves, she\u2019ll have skied, walked, and enjoyed a hot meal.<br\/>But above all, she\u2019ll have realized one thing:  <strong>Winter in the Pays des \u00c9crins isn&#8217;t just a spectacle.
