Need to escape from the hustle and bustle? In winter, we head for Ailefroide, a high-altitude hamlet frozen in the snow, nestled under the walls of Mont Pelvoux. Here, there are no roads, no network (or almost)… Just the silence, the mountain, and the essentials.
Between powdery forests, suspended ice and high mountains within snowshoeing distance, Ailefroide becomes a wild refuge, reserved for the curious and well equipped. Accessible only on foot, it is a timeless journey in the heart of the Écrins National Park.
Mountaineering and climbing paradise
Ailefroide is the 2nd largest mountaineering site in France after Chamonix. From the hamlet, you have direct access to the great races of the southern massif of the Écrins, the climbing boulders in the forest or the hiking routes to the valley of Celse-Nière. It’s simple: if you like the peaks, you’ve come to the right place.
Refuge atmosphere, but with comfort
From bivouac to comfort:
- A large shaded campsite on the banks of the torrent, a dream spot for climbers.
- Two hotels, some furnished, snack bars, restaurants and a small local grocery store.
- Rent your equipment or come to the Bureau des Guides des Écrins to plan your outing in complete safety.
Activities for everyone
Ailefroide is also:
- The Ailefroide Aventure tree climbing and tree climbing for the kids.
- Nature workshops, augmented reality tours on the history of mountaineering.
- And storytelling evenings, concerts and screenings under the stars.
Access by car or shuttle from mid-April to October.

A paradise for mountaineering and climbing… Winter version
Silence, snow, peaks. In winter, Ailefroide becomes a preserved refuge, accessible only on foot. In place of the road, a long white ribbon: here, access is by ski touring or snowshoeing, always with caution… and preferably with a mountain guide.
Ski touring or snowshoeing ?
The Ailefroide valley is a unique spot for winter roaming enthusiasts. On snowshoes, follow in the footsteps of chamois in the snowy forest. On skis, reach the foothills of the Glacier Blanc or the summer road, under the cliffs of Pelvoux.
Once in the hamlet, savour the moment: magical silence, high mountains within reach.
Access: from Les Claux, the road is not cleared of snow – 6 km to Ailefroide.
