LA ROCHE-DE-RAME Between Écrins and Queyras, a refreshing stopover

La Roche-de-Rame, located on the left bank of the Durance, is the southernmost village in the Pays des Écrins: an authentic setting, halfway between the Écrins massif and the Queyras Regional Natural Park. A former feudal site, the village stretches into several hamlets dominated by the church of Saint-Laurent and a ruined castle, witnesses of its rich medieval past. Discover its glacial lake: a refreshing setting for swimming, paddle boarding or the open-air aquapark. Higher up, the lakes of Ascension (2,350 m) and Néal offer exceptional panoramas, accessible by marked hiking trails (mountain biking and trail running also possible).

The Pra Reboul waterfalls, a popular site for canyoneers, promise sensations and immersion in the rock cut by the Durance. As for heritage, don’t miss the Saint-Laurent church and the Gallo-Roman remains of the Rama site, while a few kilometres away are Vauban citadels and local museums. Between lazing by the water, sporting adventures and cultural walks, La Roche-de-Rame is an ideal starting point for exploring the Pays des Écrins.

Rich and authentic experiences and heritage

La Roche-de-Rame is the gateway to the Pays des Écrins, offering visitors and locals its high-altitude lakes such as the Ascension Lake or its very accessible lake with camping and restaurants. A cultural space with its library and network of trails to explore in summer and winter.

A must-see in summer The Roche-de-Rame lake

Lake Roche de Rame is a small glacial lake nestled in a valley, just a stone’s throw from the village:

  • Approximately 200 m long and 100 m wide, fed by underground springs
  • Supervised swimming area
  • Lawns to relax on
  • Inflatable Water Park
  • Restaurants/snack bars nearby
  • Pedal Boat Rentals
  • Trail around the lake
  • Dogs are not allowed around or in the lake

A must-see in summer The Roche-de-Rame lake

The Lac de la Roche-de-Rame, a narrow body of water of glacial origin nestled in a lock a stone’s throw from the village, turns into a quiet corner in winter: its snow-covered banks offer an easy setting for a walk, a photo or a contemplative break. A starting point for short outings on foot or snowshoes, it remains a recognizable visual landmark in the white landscape; swimming and summer games disappear, replaced by the silent softness of the cold mountain. Remember to equip yourself warmly and check the condition of the accesses: the ground can be slippery due to frost.

A fewHiking ideas

La Roche-de-Rame is a convenient base for hiking: family-friendly loop trails, high-altitude routes, and heritage trails (stone houses, chapels) with views of the Écrins and the Durance.

  • Bathéoud / Le Puy loop (7.3 km, +629 m, ~3h50): beautiful view of the Durance, return via the Bathéou climbing site.
  • Champaussel Trail (5.8 km, +479 m, ~3h): exposed southern route, crossing landscapes with Mediterranean influence and wide views.
  • Lac de l’Ascension and Lac d’Escur (loop 14–16 km, +950 to +1,296 m, 6–8 hours): ascent to the Tête du Peyron, descents to two high-altitude lakes, extensive panoramas.
  • Lac de l’Ascension (short version) (~12–14 km AR, +950 m): day trip centred on the lake, ideal for reflections and panorama.

A fewIdeas for winter

La Roche-de-Rame remains a useful base in winter for those who want to walk on snowshoes or engage in ski touring: gentle walks such as the Boucle de Bathéou / Le Puy allow you to keep in touch with the heritage and have a view of the Durance, while the Champaussel trail offers a sunny climb on well-exposed slopes. From La Roche-de-Rame, you can easily reach the resorts, hiking trails and other sites of the Pays des Écrins to enjoy skiing or snowshoeing.
