Pelvoux-Vallouise Ice Climbing Route

Let’s be honest—the ice climbing season is kicking off in the Pays des Écrins, and you can already smell the sharp crampons.

Located in the heart of the resort, this icefall is ideal for beginners and those looking to improve their ice climbing skills in a safe and easily accessible setting.

It’s the perfect spot for a first-time experience, getting back into the season, or a guided outing—without any complicated logistics.

The 4 Ice Climbing Hotspots in the Pays des Écrins

When temperatures drop in December and January, the region becomes a veritable playground for ice enthusiasts:

  • Pelvoux-Vallouise: an artificial waterfall that is accessible and designed for learning—ideal for beginners or for practice.
  • Freissinières: an artificial waterfall, another well-maintained site, appreciated for its consistency and often very reliable conditions.
  • Freissinières Valley: a must-see for enthusiasts—with an alpine atmosphere, a variety of natural waterfalls, and spectacular scenery.

  • Vallon du Fournel: a legendary, wild, and challenging site, offering a multitude of natural routes for experienced climbers. Caution: In the event of heavy snowfall (as is currently the case), this site is not recommended at all; be sure to check with high-mountain guides.
